The AZ Awards for design by Azure magazine were held at the end of June in Toronto at Evergreen Brick Works. My first time at the awards I went to see what was happening in the latest news in design. Designs from all over the world were submitted under different categories for product and interiors.

I went to check out who the finalists were, who the jury and the people voted for and enjoy what the night had to offer. Presented by Audi, Rado, Cosentino, DXV and Keilhauer with other brands showcasing their latest offers like Smeg, Farrow & Ball and an interactive design display from students of George Brown. Rado had some really cool ultra slim watches in display in different metallic colours. The Audi R8 Spyder on display drew a lot of attention, really really nice.

Glasses of wine and canapés were always on offer plus food and some amazing desserts served. I went straight in for a chocolate filled éclair. Pendant lights hung above in the main area were designed especially for the night made out of recycled bottles, surrounded by brick walls and occasional graffitied murals. The warehouse spotted with green gardens sprouting from the concrete near the entrance made for an alluring space for the awards.

The place was full with designers, students and people from the industry from all around. I got talking to Neal Aronowitz, just turned furniture designer a couple of years back nominated for his design the Whorl Table which won the Peoples award. Over all a successful night for design in Toronto, a pretty impressive gift bag that attendees went home with and a year’s subscription to Azure magazine. It will be interesting to see who’s up for nominations next year. You can click here to see the nominations and winners for this year’s AZ Awards.
