Where it began

I always knew in the back of my mind that I wanted my own business one day. I just had no idea what it would look like.

The creatives and sports have always been what I loved the most. And what I was best at. But I wasn’t going to be a professional athlete. I love my food way too much to give up carbs and desserts.

Everyone was telling me there was no money in being an artist. I didn’t venture any further into the art route. Not as a career anyway. That left my next love, interior design.

After doing an art foundation degree in 2003, I went on to complete a Bachelor’s in interior design and landscaping and a year abroad working at an architecture firm. After finishing university and working some random jobs, I eventually got a designer job in exhibition stand design.

My boss and colleagues were great but after a few years, I was ready for a change. And Canada was another thing that always had at the back of my mind. So I moved to Canada and found work in a design retail company.

A few months before moving, I had heard about blogging. Which I figured sounded great as I could put everything I loved together, writing, design and art and do it my own way. And people were making money from it! So I bought my domain name just before I left but I didn’t do anything with it for a long time.

Amid the long shifts and the random days off my design retail job, I published a post here and there on my blog. During that time I met some more great people, but the workplace wasn’t the best fit for me. I’m not the biggest talker and with clients coming through all day, you have to do a lot of talking! I was just happy doing the interior designs and the CAD work…

Between juggling my retail job and doing freelance design work, my blog completely fell by the wayside. Which was probably a good thing because I had no clue what I was doing and was doing everything wrong! (Which I now know in hindsight). Even though I wasn’t making much money from my blog at the time, it felt good to have my own side job and write about the things I love.

In 2019 my daughter was born! I had little to no money coming in and moved back home. I thought this would be a great time to get back to blogging as it fitted around the naps, nappy changes, and everything else that comes with being a new Mom. And ultimately to see if I could make decent money from working online as I really liked the work.

Then of course we all know what happened in 2020 and with the free time I had, I put everything into my blog. Lots of online courses later, being able to figure out where I was going wrong, and lots of writing and research, I finally got my blog to where it’s making a consistent income over the past few years.

Which means I can be there at every school event for my daughter that comes up. And share and help others with what I already love to do. My next step is to get back into my art and see where else the blog takes me.
