6 Simple Steps How To Make A Cozy Reading Nook
I like reading but I feel like I should be reading way more. My goal is to read at least 10 pages of a book a day. Something, anything! I’m still working on improving my consistency with that, but it’s getting there. I love the idea of having a cozy corner at home dedicated just to reading.
Sometimes, I have two books on the go. I’m in a book club so I usually listen to the fiction books on Audible so I can listen while I’m cooking dinner or driving. And for the self-development books I love a physical copy where I can nerd out with highlights and write notes.
If you’re a homebody like me, especially during the colder months, you’ve no problem hunkering down at home. So, creating a little reading nook is a perfect decor plan. I’ve been scouring Pinterest to get some ideas on how to make a cozy reading nook.
Here are the best tips on how to create a reading nook…
1. Location
Decide where you want to set up your reading nook. Everyone is different and it depends on the space you have available at home. You might want to be in a secluded area of the home like your bedroom. Maybe you have an unused area like under the stairs or an alcove you could transform.
Or create your reading nook in a more social area like the living room or even the kitchen. Almost like a coffee shop vibe, where you’re on your own without actually being alone.
2. Lighting
Lighting is important, but this doesn’t mean you need to be near a window. Natural light is a bonus but areas where there isn’t any natural light work too. An area underneath the stairs is a great place to make a reading nook. You just need to be close to a wall socket or outlet to get the lighting you need.
You can choose from a desk lamp, a floor light, or a swing arm wall mount light. Either of those lights will be your task lighting for reading. But it’s best to have another light source as well to reduce strain on the eyes. A main light or natural light from a window is all you need to balance the lighting out.
3. Seating
With so many seating options to choose from you might be wondering where to start. The size of your area is going to determine how big your chair can be and what style is best for the space.
If you’re working with a tight space consider a chair on legs off the ground, a ghost chair, or even a single swing chair hung from the ceiling. All of these options are great for maximizing your space and not overwhelming it.
For something more low-key, beanbags and floor pillows are a great alternative.
4. Throws & Pillows
Throws and cushions always add to the cozy factor! And make your spot so much more inviting. So experiment with different fabrics, colours, and materials in your seating area.
5. Books
Of course, your reading area isn’t complete without some books. You might only need a small side table for a couple of books and space to hold your drink. Or maybe a wall ledge to keep your books neat and organized.
If you have a small to large book collection then low or floor-to-wall bookshelves are the way to go. A trolley or bar cart on wheels is a good idea too. Figure out what works best for the area you have. If you’re low on floor space wall mounted shelves are the best option.
Or you can keep things ultra simple by stacking a small pile of books next to your chair. Your books just need to be easily accessible to you.
6. Decor
Adding your own personal touches to your reading nook is what makes it unique. Finding artwork, printed quotes, or wall decor will liven up your reading spot. Wall art is a great focal point for your reading nook. And brings in your personality.
Also, plants and flowers bring in nature and are great for reducing stress and cleaning the air. Bringing in your favourite scented candles and other personal items like photos and smaller decor items, all help to bring your cozy nook together. A place where you can relax and look forward to enjoying some quiet time.
